Bermuda Have Trong Start at Carifta in Barbados
On the first day of competition, the Bermuda Triathlon Team put in some outstanding performances at the 2024 CARIFTA Triathlon and Aquathlon Championships held in Barbados.

Both Sanchez Smith and Naomi MacGuinness dominated, taking Gold in their respective categories. Competing against the best young triathletes in the Caribbean, the island’s athletes showcased their talent, determination, and sportsmanship, bringing home eight medals so far. A team of 38 triathletes and aquathletes represented Bermuda.

The day started strongly for Bermuda in the 16-19 Boy’s race. Defending champion Jamie Bedford narrowly missed out on the Gold on the final lap of the run, coming home with a Silver Medal. Ollie Hayward, who was in the top three bike pack, took the Bronze in his first year in the category.

The 13-15 Boys completed a clean sweep of the podium. In an outstanding performance, Smith attacked from the outset and outran the field to take the title. Luca Bortoli, also put in the run of his life earning Silver and Jacob Wright completed the hat trick having flown on the bike leg.

Our budding Junior Females in the 11-12 Age Group mirrored the fine performance of the 13-15 Boys by claiming all three podium positions. MacGuinness won a maiden Gold, with her trademark sprint proving to be the decisive factor. Zara Bule followed with a well-earned Silver having led the Bermuda girls all the way to the end of the bike course. Rounding it up with Bronze was Iris Duda who stopped the challengers from spoiling the clean sweep.

Steven Petty, President of the Bermuda Triathlon Association, expressed his admiration for the team’s performance: "We are incredibly proud of all of our athletes for their hard work and dedication. Their achievements at the CARIFTA Championships are a testament to the strength and depth of talent in Bermuda's triathlon community. These young athletes have not only represented our island with distinction but have also laid the foundation for future success on the international stage. The Bermuda Triathlon Association extends its heartfelt thanks to our sponsors, whose generous support made this achievement possible. Special thanks go to Appleby, Arch, Butterfield and Vallis, Gnosis Ltd., and the Department of Youth and Sport. Their commitment to the development of Bermuda’s youth athletes is greatly appreciated and instrumental in our ongoing success.”
