The Bermuda Sanshou Association team has grown in size and in strength after a successful recruitment and training course back in April. The Bermuda team will compete in the 6th Pan American Wushu Championships in Toronto, Ontario from July 21-23rd.
Team Bermuda is made up of 5 san shou fighters, 1 taichi athlete and 5 officials:
Talia Iris Female fighter at 60kg. Former junior World Karate Champion and capoeira practitioner.
Nathan Dill 65kg. Full contact fighting day view and capoeira practitioner
Reuben Bean 70kg. Shotokan Karate and Wing Chun practitioner in his Second International San Shou competition
Garon Wilkinson 75kg. Northern Shaolin kung fu, Gyaku Shin Kai Karate and capoeira practitioner in his Second International Can Shou competition
Otero Smith 80kg. Experienced in Northern Shaolin kung fu and capoeira practitioner
Celia Tuzo Taichi athelete. Won 7 medals at the Taiji Legacy International in Dallas Texas a year ago
The teams skills have improved thanks to the continuous support of Mr. Forty Rego and Rego’s Boxing Gym. Boxing skills play a major part in any full contact martial art and since the team has been training and getting some rounds in with some of his top boxers are skills have vastly improved.
This tournament is extremely important for the Bermuda Sanshou Association as it is an International Wushu Federation event, the sanctioning body of the Beijing Olympic Wushu tournament in 2008. The majority of the countries in the Pan American Region from Canada right down to Argentina will be represented. This is the second time the competition has been held in Canada, with the US, Argentina, Brazil, and Venezuela also being host of previous competitions.
