The Bermuda Amatuer Swimming Association (BASA) had a year of which it can be very proud. There were many oustanding performances produced all over the world by a variety of our athletes. Although there were other efforts throughout the year that could also have made the list, these are the Top 10 thru 6 performances BASA have compiled.
10. Rebecca Heyliger, Sharks Swim Club – Broke the 15-16 age group record in 50 freestyle at the Bermuda National Swimming Championships in a time of 27.65. This feat won her the gold medal and crowned her as the island’s fastest woman 50 freestyler. She also competed in the Carifta Games, Alberta Provincial Championship, Junior World’s in Monterrey, Mexico and also at the Canadian Age Group Nationals; proudly representing Bermuda in each competition. She is looking forward to competing again in Pune India for the Youth Commonwealth Games and we look forward to hearing about her success.
9. Nicholas Patterson, Sharks Swim Club – One of our Island’s up and coming butterfliers, he broke the 50 and 100 fly records and also won 2 medals – a silver and a bronze in the Alberta provincial championships in those same events. Nicholas had a very strong season and we hope he continues to drop his times as he competes both locally and internationally in the upcoming seasons.
8. Jason Mastalir, Sharks Swim Club – Jason has consistently improved over the last few years and especially since he started training with the Sherbrook Swim Team in Quebec, Canada. In February he broke 5 Bermuda 17-18 age group records in the 50, 100 and 200 backstroke as well as the 200 and 400 freestyle. He competed in the 2008 Canadian Age Group Nationals and went through to finals in several events. He shows promise for the future as he continues to improve his times.
7. Ashley Yearwood, Harbour Swim Club – Had another amazing season as she continued to improve her times in all her events. Her best performance of the year was her 200 fly in the Carifta Games. She shattered her own personal best time by 22 seconds – 6 seconds in the heats and a further 16 in finals, which enabled Ashley to win a silver medal for Bermuda. She was also the youngest member of the Bermuda Youth Worlds Team that competed in Monterrey, Mexico.
6. Rebecca Sharpe, Sharks Swim Club – Won 2 individual silver medals at the Carifta Games in her 100 and 200 backstroke. She smashed the age group record twice in the 200 backstroke by 3 seconds and also broke the record in the 100 backstroke by 2 seconds. As Rebecca continues to work hard at the Peddie School in New Jersey, she is sure to accomplish great things.
