Bermuda's Next Generation Brave the Elements in showcase
|
The next generation of Bermuda's sand specialists shrugged off ferocious conditions to deliver an exceptional display of athletic resilience at the second annual Bermuda National Youth Beach Volleyball Championships.
Despite challenging weather windows—with winds gusting upwards of 25 knots across the dunes—the island's young competitors showed immense mental fortitude, maintaining a remarkably high standard of tactical play throughout the tournament.
The championships featured a vibrant multi-division format across three distinct age brackets, bringing together approximately 60 aspiring athletes.
In a bid to test individual adaptability, the Under-14 division was contested as a linear ranking tournament. The bracket saw 15 girls and 10 boys compete as individuals, constantly rotating pairings within their assigned pools. In contrast, the senior brackets reverted to traditional pairs, with the Under-16 division featuring five girls' and four boys' teams, while the Under-19 bracket was contested by three girls' and five boys' pairs.
In the innovative individual format, Mathis Stevens displayed superb technical consistency through the heavy shifts to top the Under-14 Boys' podium, finishing just ahead of the equally impressive Dominic Slater and Jithom Liew.
The Under-14 Girls' pool was equally hard-fought, with Avery Bohus reading the wind brilliantly to secure top spot, while Annie Bart and Reese McAlpine claimed second and third place respectively.
As the tournament transitioned to fixed pairings, the Under-16 divisions produced some of the most competitive rallies of the weekend.
The tandem of Tyler Pethic and Giovanni Della Valle showed superior net chemistry to secure the Under-16 Boys' crown, overcoming a fierce challenge from runners-up Kai Fitzgerald and Taylor Smith, with Brandon Cunha and Daniel Smith engineering a gritty performance to complete the podium.
Llewellyn-Jones and Lillian Collette, whose defensive coverage proved impenetrable in the high winds. They held off a strong pursuit from Gwennan Matthews and Mckenna Fraser, while Zaierra Bean and Gabriella Francis fought through the classification rounds to take a well-deserved third.
The showpiece Under-19 divisions provided a thrilling glimpse into the future of senior international beach volleyball on the island.
Marcus Rodriguez and Will Bohus put on a clinical display of high-velocity serving and transition play to capture the Under-19 Boys' gold medal. The powerful duo outmaneuvered Olek Rymon-Lipinski and Ethan McAlpine in a high-octane finale, leaving Gabriel Booth and Lorenzo Pesci to claim the bronze position.
The Under-19 Girls' bracket saw Bella Sousa and Hailey Trott rise to the occasion, executing a flawless wind strategy to claim an emphatic championship victory. Olivia Gazzard and Jasmine Showers secured a superb silver medal after an intense tactical battle, while the pairing of Maya Fitzmaurice and Gabriela Gonzalez rounded out the medal positions on a memorable weekend of youth sport.

Consolation joy for Hamilton & Tucker in Dominican Republic
|
Bermuda’s elite sand specialists endured a mixed final day of play at the sixth stop of the NORCECA Continental Beach Volleyball Tour, signing off with a blend of podium near-misses and gritty consolation victories on the coast of Juan Dolio.
Following a punishing sequence of classification matches, the island's dual pairings showed plenty of character to bounce back and secure their final regional tournament rankings in the Caribbean heat.
The headline performance of the day belonged to the men's duo of Kyle Hamilton and Sean Tucker, who ended their campaign on a triumphant note by capturing a clinical victory in the 15th/16th place classification final.
Facing the U.S. Virgin Islands pairing of Jared Brown and Cole Sommer, the Bermudian tandem asserted their authority early on, dismantling their opponents' defense to claim a swift first set. While the second frame proved a far tighter, touch-and-go affair, Hamilton and Tucker held their nerve under pressure, wrapping up a comprehensive 2-0 (21-11, 21-19) victory in just 32 minutes.
There was to be no double celebration for the delegation, however, as the women's pairing of Megan Hands and Natalie Gazzard suffered an agonizing straight-sets defeat in their 11th/12th place final.
Locking horns with the formidable twin threat of Vernecia Caines and Verneeci Caines—also representing the U.S. Virgin Islands—Hands and Gazzard were embroiled in an absolute marathon opening set. The Bermudians saved multiple set points in a dramatic deuce battle before finally succumbing 27-25.
That opening set exertion clearly took its toll. Despite a valiant defensive effort in the second frame, Hands and Gazzard could not break the Caines sisters' rhythm, eventually falling to a 2-0 (27-25, 21-16) defeat in a grueling 39-minute clash to finish 12th overall.
With the demanding sixth leg of the continental tour now wrapped up, both squads will take invaluable competitive data and a hard-fought match victory back to the Atlantic as they continue their development on the international circuit.

Agony in Juan Dolio as Bermuda Duos Endure Grueling Day
|
Bermuda’s elite sand specialists endured a punishing second day of pool play at the sixth stop of the NORCECA Continental Beach Volleyball Tour, suffering a series of bruising defeats on the coast of Juan Dolio.
Both the women's pairing of Megan Hands and Natalie Gazzard, and the men’s duo of Kyle Hamilton and Sean Tucker, found the high-octane regional competition unforgiving as they were pushed to their limits in the Dominican heat.
Hands and Gazzard began their day looking to ignite their campaign in their final Pool D match against St Kitts and Nevis’ Shanella Harris and Jontelle Hensley. Despite flashes of resilience, the Bermudian duo struggled to contain their opponents, going down 2-0 (21-14, 21-16) in a brisk 33-minute encounter.
There was no time to dwell on the loss as they quickly returned to the sand for the 9th-12th place classification play-offs. Facing the Cayman Islands’ Joanna Robinson and Luna Ebanks, Hands and Gazzard fought hard but ultimately succumbed to a 2-0 (21-16, 21-12) defeat after a grueling 30-minute battle.
Meanwhile, it proved to be an equally taxing day for Hamilton and Tucker in the men's division.
Locking horns with Mexico’s formidable Antonio Lares and Carlos Ayala in their final Pool B fixture, the Bermudian pair found answers hard to come by against the clinical Mexicans, falling to a 2-0 (21-14, 21-13) loss in half an hour.
Relegated to the 13th-16th place classification play-offs, Hamilton and Tucker faced regional rivals Jesario Ebanks and Dylan Lynee of the Cayman Islands. Hoping to salvage a victory, the match instead slipped away rapidly in the second set, with the Cayman islanders wrapping up a 2-0 (21-16, 21-8) victory in just 29 minutes.
While the scorelines make for tough reading, the relentless schedule on the Juan Dolio coast offers Bermuda's leading beach volleyballers a stark reminder of the fine margins at the elite continental level.

Heartbreak in the sand as Bermuda Fall Short in Juan Dolio
|
Bermuda’s elite sand specialists endured a grueling opening day of pool play at the sixth stop of the NORCECA Continental Beach Volleyball Tour, suffering a series of agonizing defeats on the coast of Juan Dolio, Dominican Republic.
Facing world-class, Olympic-pathway opposition on the high-octane regional circuit, the island's dual-gender contingent displayed immense character but ultimately lacked the clinical edge required to seal historic breakout victories.
In the Men's Division, the veteran pairing of Kyle Hamilton and Sean Tucker were left to rue what might have been after pushing their Central American rivals to the absolute limit in a pair of brutal three-set thrillers.
Competing in a heavily stacked Pool B, Hamilton and Tucker opened their campaign with an exhausting one-hour marathon against Irving Reyes and Adonis Rodríguez of Honduras. The Bermudian duo showcased brilliant resilience, bouncing back from dropping a high-stakes first set 26-24 to ruthlessly claim the second 21-18 with clinical blocking at the net.
However, the relentless humidity began to take its toll in the deciding third frame, with the Honduran pair hitting their targets to steal the match 15-10.
Hoping to keep their knockout hopes alive, Hamilton and Tucker returned to the sand to face home favorites Alexander Wilmore and Ramón De Jesús of the Dominican Republic. Once again, the local favorites were forced into a deep tactical battle. The Bermudians struck first with an impressive 21-19 opening set, but the host nation pairing completely shifted momentum with sharp serving, fighting back to take the final two frames 21-13, 15-9 to break Bermudian hearts.
Over in Pool D of the Women’s Division, teenage phenoms Megan Hands and Natalie Gazzard faced a steep learning curve during a punishing introduction to continental play.
The fast-evolving duo opened against Costa Rica’s formidable tandem of Marcela Araya and Eugenia Ramírez. Despite showing great baseline coverage, Hands and Gazzard were kept off-balance by the Costa Ricans' superior chemistry, falling 21-16, 21-10 in a quick-fire 28-minute battle.
The young pairing showed immediate tactical adjustments in their second match against Guatemala's Paola Alvarado and Daphne Mendoza, fiercely trading blows in a highly competitive opening set before ultimately succumbing to a straight-sets 21-18, 21-8 defeat.
Both national teams will now look to dust themselves down and address their unforced errors as they head into the final classification rounds on Saturday morning.
