Bermuda’s Kyle Hamilton and Sean Tucker saw their Olympic qualification hopes dashed in the round of 12 after suffering a straight-sets defeat to the US Virgin Islands at the Areia Sports Complex in Vega Baja, Puerto Rico.
Taking to the sand for day two of the NORCECA Continental Olympic Qualifier, the 10th-seeded Bermudian duo faced a formidable test against eighth seeds Bryce Mayer and Tyler Penberthy.
The US Virgin Islands pair seized control from the outset, dominating the net and dictating play with crisp serving to wrap up a one-sided opening set 21-6.
Hamilton and Tucker showed greater resolve in the second set, finding better rhythm in transition, but Mayer and Penberthy proved far too consistent in the windy coastal conditions. The USVI tandem closed out a convincing 21-6, 21-9 victory in just 25 minutes to book their place in the quarter-finals.
The result concludes a demanding tournament for Hamilton and Tucker on the international stage, having also faced tough assignments against high-calibre opposition during the preliminary pool stages.
