Bermudian midfielder Lauren Cardwell and her University of Toronto Varsity Blues wrapped up their regular season in style with a clinical 2 - 0 victory over the Guelph Gryphons at Back Campus Fields.
The result cements a formidable regular-season campaign for the Blues, who finish second in the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) standings with an 8-1-3 record to book their place at the upcoming post-season tournament.
Toronto delivered an assured performance from the opening whistle in their home finale. Second-year goalkeeper Mary Yang set the tone early on with a sharp intervention to deny Guelph, providing the defensive foundation for the hosts to take the initiative.
The breakthrough arrived courtesy of first-year forward Olivia Thompson, whose early strike put the Blue and White on the front foot. Toronto remained relentless in pursuit of an insurance marker, controlling possession and pinning Guelph back for long spells.
Their persistence was rewarded three minutes from time when team captain Maggie Mullins calmly converted a 57th-minute penalty stroke to put the contest beyond reach and secure the clean sheet.
Toronto now turn their attention to the OUA Championship tournament hosted by the York Lions at Alumni Field on 24-25 October, where Cardwell and her team-mates will look to add another provincial title to the program's storied history.
