Islanders made an emphatic statement on the opening day of the Second Senior Bowling League season, sweeping aside Just Kickin with a comprehensive 4-0 whitewash at Warwick Bowl.
Elsewhere across the lanes, Blue Angels, Last Pin, and Pinsplitters all registered commanding 3-1 victories over Drifters, New Comers, and Star Lites respectively to get their campaigns off to winning starts.
The men's division witnessed an intensely competitive display at the top of the individual standings. Michael Vassell set the standard in the scratch game with an impressive 198, narrowly edging Kelvin Burt on 191 and Elvin Thomas on 177. Vassell and Thomas could not be separated in the scratch series, sharing top honours with matching scores of 510, with Burt trailing just behind on 496.
Burt came into his own in the handicap contests, sweeping both honours with an outstanding 251 game and a 676 series. Thomas took second place in both categories with scores of 217 and 630, while Vassell rolled a 216 handicap game and Willoughby Tucker claimed third in the series on 578.
In the women's events, the scratch game delivered nail-biting finishes decided by single pins. Jolene Bean topped the field with a 183, closely followed by Susie Bradshaw on 182 and Bobbie Jones on 181.
Bradshaw bounced back to dominate the scratch series, compiling a tournament-best 524 ahead of Jones on 475 and Bean on 452.
The handicap competition saw Bean lead the single game on 662, followed by Joan Clarke on 238 and Bradshaw on 228. Bradshaw also set the early pace in the handicap series on 239, while Clarke finished on 630 and Dolores Simmons secured third place with 623.
