Bermuda’s elite sand specialists endured a punishing second day of pool play at the sixth stop of the NORCECA Continental Beach Volleyball Tour, suffering a series of bruising defeats on the coast of Juan Dolio.
Both the women's pairing of Megan Hands and Natalie Gazzard, and the men’s duo of Kyle Hamilton and Sean Tucker, found the high-octane regional competition unforgiving as they were pushed to their limits in the Dominican heat.
Hands and Gazzard began their day looking to ignite their campaign in their final Pool D match against St Kitts and Nevis’ Shanella Harris and Jontelle Hensley. Despite flashes of resilience, the Bermudian duo struggled to contain their opponents, going down 2-0 (21-14, 21-16) in a brisk 33-minute encounter.
There was no time to dwell on the loss as they quickly returned to the sand for the 9th-12th place classification play-offs. Facing the Cayman Islands’ Joanna Robinson and Luna Ebanks, Hands and Gazzard fought hard but ultimately succumbed to a 2-0 (21-16, 21-12) defeat after a grueling 30-minute battle.
Meanwhile, it proved to be an equally taxing day for Hamilton and Tucker in the men's division.
Locking horns with Mexico’s formidable Antonio Lares and Carlos Ayala in their final Pool B fixture, the Bermudian pair found answers hard to come by against the clinical Mexicans, falling to a 2-0 (21-14, 21-13) loss in half an hour.
Relegated to the 13th-16th place classification play-offs, Hamilton and Tucker faced regional rivals Jesario Ebanks and Dylan Lynee of the Cayman Islands. Hoping to salvage a victory, the match instead slipped away rapidly in the second set, with the Cayman islanders wrapping up a 2-0 (21-16, 21-8) victory in just 29 minutes.
While the scorelines make for tough reading, the relentless schedule on the Juan Dolio coast offers Bermuda's leading beach volleyballers a stark reminder of the fine margins at the elite continental level.
