The Continental Bowling League delivered a night of major shocks at Warwick Lanes this week, as the seventh-placed Invaders produced the upset of the season to topple title-chasers Under Dawgs.
On a night where the standings took a significant shift, the Under Dawgs missed a golden opportunity to close the gap on the league leaders. Despite sitting comfortably in second place, they were outclassed by a clinical Invaders side who secured a dominant 19-8 victory. The result leaves the Dawgs looking over their shoulders as the chasing pack gains ground.
The primary beneficiaries of that slip-up were the third-placed Astronauts, who made light work of their encounter with Spicenix. In a one-sided affair, the Astronauts powered to a 25-2 win, a scoreline that keeps them firmly in the hunt for a top-two finish as the season enters its final stretch.
League leaders Nifty Rollers were denied the chance to extend their lead at the summit, as their highly anticipated clash with the fourth-placed Odd Balls was postponed. While the Rollers remain top of the table, the postponement adds to a mounting fixture backlog for the frontrunners.
Further down the table, New Hope secured a vital 18-9 win over ninth-placed Sunset. The victory provides eighth-placed New Hope with some much-needed breathing room from the bottom of the division, while Sunset remains rooted to the foot of the table following another difficult outing.
With the fifth-placed Cubs taking their scheduled bye week, the mid-table scramble remains tightly packed. The league will return to Warwick Lanes next Monday, with all eyes on whether the Under Dawgs can find their rhythm or if the Nifty Rollers will finally pull away at the top.
