Maha Clarke’s freshman midfielder teammate Lauren Wolfgang scored the game winner to lift Queens past Mercyhurst University, 3-2, at Dickson Field. The win brings the Queens University of Charlotte's record to 8-6 in field hockey action this season.
Senior midfielder Meghan Smiga scored the first goal of the day on the first Senior Day in program history. The goal would come in the 10th minute on an assist from Renee Smith. Smith soon followed with a goal of her own in the 12th with Smiga on the passing end.
Mercyhurst University answered in the 31st minute with a goal from Alexis Skibitsky, who stole the ball in the back field and went one on one against Queens' Miranda Childers in the cage for the score.
Mercyhurst then tied the game up at 2-2 with a goal right out of the halftime break from Nicolette Tomani.
The 2-2 score held until a penalty corner opportunity late in the game. Wolfgang took the penalty stroke and stepped into play where she received the ball right back from Abby Carls before sending the ball into the back of the cage for the win.
Queens outshot Mercyhurst 19-12, putting 13 shots on goal. Childers took the win in goal after totaling six saves.
