Toms & Bedwas Fall In Season Final Match

IslandStats.com
Brynley Toms and his Bedwas teammates bought the curtain down on the 2017-18 season as for the second successive week as they lost by the narrowest of margins- a solitary point 31 – 30 to Llanelli RFC.

An arcing Jonny Lewis run in saw Llanelli ahead in the second minute but the score was unconverted.

Two Steffan Jones penalties after six and eleven minutes saw Bedwas edge ahead before Aaron Bramwell stretched out to touch down at the base of the posts. Jones added the conversion to increase the lead.

Losing flanker David McGuigan through injury and Adam Dove for a temporary blood replacement of Joshua Williams disrupted Bedwas defensive systems and allowed Matthew Jenkins pulled a try back for Llanelli, Ashley Sutton's conversion reducing the deficit to a solitary point.

Hooker Taylor Davies restored Llanelli lead as he crossed for a try after 29 minutes. Ashley Sutton added the conversion and a penalty three minutes later to increase the lead.

Bedwas pulled back 7 points seconds before half time courtesy of a penalty try as the Bedwas forwards out scrummaged their opposite numbers.

Two Ashley Sutton penalty goals within eight minutes of the restart increased the Llanelli lead but Bedwas kept on their tails with a Steffan Jones penalty.

Sutton kicked a further penalty after 62 minutes to put his side eight points ahead but Bedwas continued to attack and gained their reward after 65 minutes. Luke Crane ducked under several would be tacklers to cross for a try. Steffan Jones' conversion put Bedwas to within a point of their hosts with 14 minutes left to play.

Try as they might Bedwas could not break down a resolute Llanelli defence and the game ended without further scores.

The losing bonus point sees Bedwas finish the season on 48 points and in sixth position. Ebbw Vale in seventh position have 44 points and one game left at Cross Keys in midweek, all of Bedwas will be willing on the home side in the hope of holding onto the sixth spot.
