Toms & Bedwas Fall to Carmarthen

IslandStats.com
“An opportunity missed” lamented Brynley Toms and his Bedwas teammates head coach Steve Law after watching his sides’ disappointing performance which saw Carmarthen’s first half dominance earn a deserved win.

Carmarthen started at an express pace and scored the first try in the first minute as quick hands down the left with the Bedwas defence in disarray left winger Morgan Griffiths dotted down close to the posts. Outside half Craig Evans added the extras with relative ease.

Evans added a penalty goal after five minutes and his side were ten points to the good, with Bedwas struggling to find any cohesion.

Bedwas hit back with their first foray into the visitors territory as James Dixon notched a penalty from close range after Quins were adjudged offside. Bedwas joy was somewhat short lived as Evans extended his sides lead via another penalty goal.

Carmarthen continued to dominate in almost all facets of the game but with twenty eight minutes gone a loose Carmarthen pass was seized upon by Patric Lewis who sprinted fifty metres to touchdown under the posts. Dixon easily converting and Bedwas were only three points adrift.

Carmarthen were not to be deterred and Evans added a further penalty after 36 minutes after missing with an attempt a few minutes earlier.

Bedwas would have been happy to reach half time only six points in arrears but the Quins had other ideas and after a series of scrums close to the Bedwas line the referee had no option other than award the visitors a penalty try as the home scrum disintegrated. Evans added the conversion as the half time whistle sounded to put his side firmly in control and twenty three points to ten ahead.

The second half started as the first ended with the visitors attacking and things went from bad to worse for the home side as Carmarthen dominance at the scrum was rewarded with a penalty chance and Bedwas prop Toms despatched to the sin-bin. Evans, however, missed the kick.

Bedwas threw on five replacements in a bid to try and get something from the game and this seemed to give Bedwas parity despite playing with fourteen men as these replacements entered the field.

Bedwas tried to run the ball at every opportunity but the final pass was all too often inaccurate and chances were lost.

However their persistence paid off after a fine break through midfield saw him brought down five metres from the try line but Phillip Pariyo followed up and gleefully dived over for a try which replacement Richard Powell successfully converted.

Bedwas sensed a comeback, Mike Callow and Richard Powell came close after breaks through midfield but mishandling and good defence prevented any further scores leaving Bedwas having to settle for a losing bonus point.
