The Bermuda Rugby Football Union [BRFU] held their Annual General Meeting recently with all but two of the previous Executive Committee being re-elected.
Re-elected President Sean Field-Lament expressed his thanks and the gratitude of the Union to outgoing Chairman Lawrence Bird and Vice President Roedolf van der Westhuizen.
In addition to his recent three year stint as BRFU Chairman, Bird also coached every Men's, Women's and U19 Bermuda National Team at some stage during the past decade. Most notably guiding the Senior Men's XV to back-to-back Caribbean Championships in 2011 & 2012.
Former South Africa U20 Captain, van der Westhuizen's contribution on and off the field in his relatively short time on the island has been immense. Initially as U19s forwards Coach, and then Player-Coach of the Senior Men's National Team and Police RFC.
Gareth Nokes, previously Chairman of the BRFU's Youth Rugby Committee, was unanimously elected to replace Bird as Chairman, while Benjamin Beasley steps in as Vice President.
They will be joined for the 2016/17 season by Club Representatives Tommy Edwards [Police], Richard Howells [Renegades], Jonathan Lightbourne [Teachers] and Andrew Barnes [Mariners].
Field-Lament brought the meeting to a close saying, "We are looking for a repeat of 2016's success in 2017! Rugby is growing amongst the youth and we are very excited about what is happening with women's rugby and the Sevens program. There are several events that we are looking forward to in particular the Ariel Re Bermuda Sevens. There are some new faces on the executive which will provide energy and a new perspective. It's an exciting time for rugby in Bermuda."
