Butterfield Pulls Out of the Ironman Kona

Butterfield in Action
Tyler Butterfield took to the Ironman World Championships in Kona, 35 years after his father Jim Butterfield crossed the line in 7th place.

Butterfield was on the back of the 2nd swim group coming out of the water in a time of 50:07.

Butterfield rode the first part of the Bike aggressively he was working hard to get to the first group attempting to catch the lead group.

As the group reached Kawaihae starting Hawi Climb at the 42.67 mile mark, Butterfield was in 19th place 23 second behind the leader Michael Weiss.

At the 59.27 mile Hawi Turn, Butterfield received a 5 minutes penalty, pushing him back down the leaderboard and out of contention.

Butterfield eventually completed the Bike Course in 4:48:20. Jan Frodeno was the first out of Transition 2 with the clock showing 5:20:56, Butterfield exited Transition with the clock on 5:38:27.

Butterfield withdrew at 5 mile mark on the Run Course.

Butterfield had earlier been penalized with the draft penalty which in the end was challenging to accept as it proved it was not going to be his day.
