Osagi Bascome and his Bristol City Under-23 teammates advanced to the southern area final of the Central League Cup with a 3-1 victory over their Portsmouth counterparts at Failand.
Bascome watched the match from the bench, but first team duo Mark Little and Zak Vyner were both involved as Freddie Hinds fired in two goals for Alex Ball’s side.
Diego De Girolamo, Jonny Smith and Hinds all came close to breaking the deadlock in a goalless first half, but City made their dominance count after the interval.
The hosts went in front 13 minutes into the second period from the penalty spot. When Jake Andrews’ cross was blocked by a hand, De Girolamo stepped up to find the bottom corner.
Andrews struck a post soon after, while Smith should have hit the target from a tight angle having been presented with the ball by the Portsmouth keeper.
But City were rarely threatened defensively and doubled their lead thanks to some brilliant play from De Girolamo, who left three defenders in his wake before setting up Hinds to score.
Pompey did pull a goal back four minutes from time through Theo Widdrington, but City substitute Kel Akpobire stole the ball in visiting territory before finding Hinds to slot home his second and round off a deserved win.
