The Bermuda School Sports Federation will be hosting the 36th annual Denton Hurdle Memorial Awards via islandstats.com starting Wednesday, June 23rd. The videos will also be featured on youtube.com on the “BSSF Bermuda” page and “islandstats” page.
The Denton Hurdle Memorial Awards is the highlight of the BSSF calendar. This year we are honored to highlight and recognize Bermuda’s finest primary, middle and senior school student-athletes. Each of the nominees are exceptional high achieving leaders for their respective schools. They have all made their schools, teachers, coaches, and schoolmates very proud of their achievements.
The awards were introduced in 1986 to honor the late Denton Hurdle. Hurdle was a keen sportsman who attended Warwick Academy, Bermuda College, and Dalhousie University. After completing his physical education degree he went on to teach at Warwick Academy. He was an avid sportsman and excelled in soccer, cricket and volleyball. His first love however was rugby. He went on to captain the Teachers Rugby Football Club. He was also a regular member of the Bermuda National Team.
Each school is afforded the opportunity to nominate one boy and one girl for the award. All nominees will receive a certificate and medal of recognition. A male and female winner and runners-up will be named in each category.
To be nominated for the award, students must display the following qualities: active participation, leadership, sportsmanship, self-discipline, dedication and cooperation. They must demonstrate positive attitudes in school. Nominees should also be good scholar-athletes as well as good role models. Only students in the final year of primary, middle or senior school are eligible for this reward.
