Timo de Jong (Telco'm-On Clima-Oss) rode to victory in the 37th Classic City of Torredonjimeno, after breaking away from the small group of favorites with 15 kilometers to go, no other rider was able to hunt him down anymore as he clocked 4:03:44. Marc Brustenga (Caja Rural-RGA) became the fastest in the sprint of the chasing group to take second, 55 seconds behind the winner, Brustenga has taken back the lead of the Spanish Cup.
Hopkins finished with a group of riders that completed the challenging course in a time of 4:25.00.
Hopkins said, “It was a really hard race out there today, the race was 165 km with 2800 meters of climbing (100 miles with 8,800 feet). My focus for the day was to try and get in an early break to have some slipping room when we hit the big climb of the day.”
“The race was full-blown until the climb so a break was never established and when the climbers set the pace I wasn’t able to keep the intensity they were setting. I got over the climb with a small group and rode into the finish with them,” continued Hopkins.
Hopkins concluded, “I am still learning the ropes of racing here with regards to when I should be working hard and when I should be trying to recover, but it is coming more and more with every race.”
