If there is an ideal way to begin a golf tournament, Jeffrey Evanier might have found it Tuesday in the 85th Rhode Island Open at Kirkbrae.
Evanier, a 2014 graduate of Eckerd College, birdied his first hole. Then he birdied the second. And the third and the fourth. Four holes in he was 4-under better which, as it turned out, was better than anyone else in the field was able to do all day.
Evanier, who is from Clinton, Ct., finished with a 5-under-par 65, good enough for a three-stroke lead in the 54-hole event.
Daniel Augustus will begin his Second Round of the 85th Rhode Island Open Championship 6 strokes off the leader Evanier after shooting a 1-over par 71 and is T16th.
Augustus had a solid start and was 3-under through the first twelve holes, only to shoot 4-over during the final six holes.
Augustus’ round consisted of 3 Birdies, 11 Pars and 4 Bogey’s.
