San Diego - Stadium America's Cup 2017 Sailing

IslandStats.com
San Diego has promised to deliver "A Revolution in Stadium Sailing" if it wins the right to host the 2017 America's Cup.

The southern Californian city is battling Bermuda for the hosting rights.

America's Cup officials have indicated they will make their choice by the end of the year with the belated decision crucial to planning and design for all the syndicates involved, including Team New Zealand.

San Diego officials have launched a glitzy video talking up the city's reputation in delivering international events and its potential to provide "an all-new spectator experience", as the Cup looks to continue the spectacular inshore racing that marked San Francisco's successful staging of the regatta last year.

Animations show the San Diego inner harbor area transformed for racing with the 62-foot catamarans that will be used.

There's plenty of American razzmatazz in the video where San Diego declares it "has the experience, is ready and reliable".

"We can guarantee the element critical to world-class sailing competition - wind," it said.

"You can count on the ideal breeze, eight knots, 93 per cent of the time."

The promoters say that will mean a reliable TV schedule, something that dogged racing in San Francisco.

The video notes that San Diego has hosted a number of world-class events, including the Super Bowl Football, US Open Golf, World Series Baseball and Major Sailing Regattas, including hosting the 1988, 1992 and 1995 America's Cups.

Bermuda intends to have racing in the Great Sound, which is also considered ideal for spectators and is favored by decent winds.

However, a move to Bermuda would represent a radical shift - it would be the first time that an American defender has hosted the cup series in foreign waters.

Bermuda also has a time zone more favorable to European TV markets than America's west coast.
