CONCACAF To Remain Without A President For Now

IslandStats.com
Jamaica’s football boss Captain Horace Burrell will be part of an interim body to run the affairs of CONCACAF until a sweeping reform process is completed and a new president elected.

CONCACAF announced that it will remain without a president until its next congress in May after Honduran Alfredo Hawit was arrested in Zurich on corruption charges.

“It is critical for the Confederation’s future that the next president be elected by the full congress, rather than statutorily appointed,” Burrell was quoted as saying.

“Under this leadership structure, CONCACAF can ensure there is sufficient time to publicly vet candidates while the Confederation focuses on continued implementation of strong reforms.”

The Confederation’s Executive Committee unanimously agreed not to appoint a successor president to Hawit, who has been named among other FIFA officials accused of hatching an elaborate multimillion dollar bribery scheme.

A statement released on Monday said CONCACAF will operate through the members of the executive committee until a new president is elected by member associations at its congress in Mexico City next May.

“The CONCACAF EXCO concluded that, in light of current events, it is critical that the Confederation’s next president be determined by a public election and the scrutiny that comes with it,” said the statement.

Other members of the CONCACAF executive committee are Justino Compean (Mexico), Sunil Gulati (USA), Pedro Chaluja (Panma), Luis Hernandez (Cuba), Victor Montagliani (Canada), and Sonia Bien-Aime (Turks and Caicos), and who will oversee the Confederation’s operations and serve in an advisory capacity to CONCACAF’s acting general secretary, Ted Howard, and director-level staff.

“CONCACAF must maintain stability in the Confederation’s day-to-day operations,” said Compean.
