National Training Centre Invitational Update

Bermuda Select 1 Australia 4

Bermuda’s Select Team went down 4 – 1 to Australia in their opening game of the National Training Centre Invitational in California.

The Invitational is more of a Training Camp for Australia, Chile and the United States of America all using Under 20 players, with Bermuda allowed to use over aged players.

Bermuda’s Starting Line Up: Jahquil Hill, Jalen Harvey, Terrance Webb, William White, Dakai Grant, Jaz Ratteray-Smith, Rai Simons, Jaylon Bather, Willie Clemens, Lejuan Simmons, Jair Minors.

The match started off tense with no real penetration by either team as both teams spend time testing each other out. Bermuda’s first promising attack by Harvey was cut out by an Australian defender.

Bermuda won the first corner of the game, but from the clearance Australia break for their first attack, but it was cut out by White.

Australia began to create more chances, as cross into the Bermuda box was cleared by Harvey, Simmons breaks at the other end, but his shot went over the crossbar.

Australia came close to opening the scoring in the 20th minute when their striker watched his shot crash against the crossbar and got out for a goal kick.

Awer Mabil gave Australia the lead in the 23rd minute, feeling the edge, Australia were quickly back on the attack, but Minors was on hand to defend.

Clemons picked up the first card of the game with the referee showing him a yellow card, Chae Brangman replaced minors with Grant dropping in defense.

Seven minutes later Bermuda was level, an own goal made the score 1 – 1 a score that would stand until the half time break.

In the second half Bermuda was keeping Australia pinned in their goal area, but Australia break and have a promising attack wasted with a shot that goes wide.

In the 55th minute Mabil scored again ad Australia went ahead 2 – 1, a breakdown in the Bermuda half saw the ball turned over and Australia made them pay.

Simons has a shot go just wide, Simons was then replaced by Zaire Burchall, Zeiko Lewis was also brought on replacing White and immediately has a shot go just wide.

Burchall had a shot saved minutes later, as Bermuda piled on the pressure looking for the equalizer. Bermuda then brought on Shakeem Albouy, Mauriq Hill and Jibri Lawrence-Salaam, with Rattery-Smith, Simmons and Harvey all making way.

The fourth official showed 4 additional minutes and in that time Bermuda conceded two goals to fall 4 – 1. Marc Marino made it 3 – 1 with a goal in the second minute of stoppage time and Stefan Mauk scored one minute later.
