Record signing Wells, who scored in his first two appearances last month, has not found the net in five starts since.
The Bermuda international said: “The manager has shown faith in me and it’s up to me to repay him.”
Wells, who was substituted after 71 minutes against Sheffield Wednesday, added: “I’m very critical of my recent performances.
“I wasn’t good enough on Saturday and I can probably say the same about the last few matches.
“The chances haven’t fallen for me as fluently as I’d like. That’s where as a striker you need to be creative and I don’t think I’ve done that.
“But I’m not going to let it knock me back. I’m going to keep going and hopefully once I’ve got a goal more will follow.”
Wells highlighted the fact that just nine months ago he was playing in League II with neighbours Bradford City.
He said: “I’ve come from a very different environment and made a big step up. I knew it wasn’t going to be easy.
“Even though I was fortunate enough to score in my first two games I always knew things would need to settle down.

“But it’s not about the team learning to play with me, it’s about me learning to play with them. Hopefully it’ll come in time.”
He added the players aim to bounce back against Barnsley and said: “We’re still a relatively young team trying to progress at this level.
“We’re trying to look up the table to finish as close as we can to the play-offs.”
