Rain delayed the start on Day 3 of the 2014 International Tennis Federation (ITF)/Grand Slam Development Fund (GSDF) English Caribbean Wilson 12 and Under Central America and the Caribbean Tennis Confederation (COTECC) Team Championship Round Robin Stage at the National Tennis Courts in St. Lucia.
The rains eased and there was a sufficient break to get some matches played. Bermuda got on court around 4pm and were able to complete their final Round Robin match against Guyana.
Trey Mallory and Ben Jones both rolled over their opponents with no trouble. The key element was to remained focused and be aware that there will be more difficult matches to come.
Jones defeated Antionne Andres 4 - 0, 4 – 0, while Mallory defeated Vijay Sharma 4 - 0, 4- 1 and in the Doubles Jones and Mallory won 4 - 0, 4 - 0.
Play was not completed last night therefore a few matches will need to be played this morning to decide the final groupings for the knock out stage.
In the top group however, Bermuda, Jamaica and the Bahamas have qualified for the main draw grouping. The fourth and final country for this group will be decided between Curacao and the host country St. Lucia 1. They stand at 1 match each, with the doubles to decide the winner of the tie.
Bermuda will play Jamaica in one Semi-Final, while Bahamas must wait for their opponent from in the morning catch up match.
Bermuda team coach Jerome Bradshaw said, “Jamaica will be a test for Bermuda. They have players who are good steady players from the baseline and can be threatening when they come into the short court. Mallory and Jones must be on their game to get through this Semi-Final. A victory here will ensure a place in Mexico.”
