James Finnigan and his St. Mary's University Men's Tennis teammates kicked off the annual Rattlesnake festivals across Oklahoma, defeating 22nd-ranked Cameron 4 - 3.
St. Mary’s improved to 10-3 on the season and 3-1 in Lone Star Conference play, while Cameron fell to 9-7 overall and 3-2 in Lone Star action.
After claiming a point in the doubles, Cameron increased its lead to 2-0 with a straight-sets win at No. 2 singles, however, senior Finnigan got them on the scoreboard with a 3-6, 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 5 over Marek Slojewski. Cameron also won at the fourth ladder spot to take a 3-1 edge in the overall match.
But St. Mary’s would then win the next three singles matches to earn the 4 – 3 win.
It is the first victory for St. Mary’s this season over a nationally-ranked team and they remain perfect in true road matches (6-0).
