Preparations are well underway for The Highland Spring Junior Open Tennis Tournament being held at the Pomander Gate Tennis Club in Paget from July 11th through 15th.
This is a BLTA sanctioned tournament and players compete for national ranking points. “Highland Spring is a big supporter of tennis including junior tennis”, said Terri Durrant, Advertising Manager at Butterfield & Vallis, local distributors for Highland Spring brand of bottled waters. “Highland Spring has sponsored this event which showcases our young, up and coming tennis players for a number of years.” she added.
“Pomander Gate Tennis Club is a leader in competitive and social tennis in Bermuda” said Ed Sousa, President at PGTC. He continues “Juniors are the lifeblood of any club and providing the youth of Bermuda with the opportunity to engage in a sport which will benefit their physical and social development must be an ongoing objective for every athletic club on the island.”
PGTC resident coach Blair Rance added “The development of our junior programs is paramount to the ongoing health of tennis in Bermuda and at Pomander Gate we have started a junior ladder similar to our seniors’ ladder, but using reduced speed tennis balls.” Mr. Rance continued “This gives the juniors the opportunity to play competitive tennis and develop the requisite skills to enable playing in competitions while at the same time improving their abilities as they progress through the ranks.”
Sousa added “At Pomander Gate, investing in our juniors is a critical part of our plan to build for the future of tennis in Bermuda. We have reduced our annual junior membership fee and the opportunity to play a popular sport and to take part in everything that the club has to offer will provide our young members with all the benefits of good clean fun through healthy sport.”
