Jonte Smith and his Eastbourne Borough teammates ended their season with a 2 – 0 win over Staines Town, Eastbourne were determined to go out with a win and even Gary Hart's dismissal on the half hour did not allow them to stray.
Danny Potter was called into early action, saving from Tony Garrod at the near post in only the 3rd minute. A decent end to the campaign was obviously the aim for both clubs, and Boro responded with Smith getting across the last man from a Darren Lok cross, the ball flying over.
Gary Hart drew his first yellow card in the 21st minute, his tackle a little late but hardly reckless, and his second came in the 32nd minute. As he made his way to the dressing room the question on the fans mind would have been can Eastbourne cope an hour with 10 men after a punishing schedule in recent weeks ? The answer was an emphatic yes. Tommy Widdrington shuffled his pack and introduced Simon Johnson for Jamie Smith, not that he had been performing badly, but "Supporters Club Player of the Season" Johnson would add bite to the reduced side. The goals came in the 58th and 84th minutes, Smith was then substituted in the 85th minute.
